Roger Simmons

The Towering Inferno
film (1974)

As an electrical subcontractor to the worlds newest and tallest skyscraper, you would expect this guy to be pretty much clued up when it comes to the building codes and regulations - right? - Wrong! Not only does Roger Simmons cut all the corners he can to save his father-in-law, Jim Duncan some petty cash, but he also treats his wife and home like a doss house, spending days at a time on the job.

Now to make things worse, on the opening night of this tremendous achievement, every rich guy in town, including the senator and many stars form screen and television are holding a party in the promenade sweet, some 135 floors above the street. Little do they realise the grief that this night is going to bring them! Within hours of the all the celebratory lights being switched on, there is a power overload and fire upon fire breaks out around the tower, trapping most of the guest at the top.

Despite varies failed rescue attempts, the fire patrol try one last ditch act of bravery and decide to try and the save the guests via a breeches buoy - a cable strung between two buildings supporting a chair, which can be pulled backwards and forward between them, carrying just one person at a time.

Roger has already tried to "pull" the wife of the architect and has tried to escape on his own but to no avail - so instead goes for the buoy. This is when things turn nasty. He refuses to take his turn in the cue, and after a small scuffle, he and several others man-handle their way on to the precarious chair, which by now has left the building and is starting it's decent towards the other tower. Roger has the upper hand and kicks the other two hang-on's, who fall to their death below, but unfortunately there is a large explosion near the buoy, causing the line to break and it to fall and Roger is sent swiftly to the pavement, some 100+ floors below.

A lousy fighter, can't even take a punch from an old man like his father-in-law, without being proper winded.

WEAPONS :

His fists.

QUOTE :

"And let me ask you something else, my dear father-in-law! Am I the only subcontractor you encouraged to cut corners?!"
