Rene Emile Belloq
Raiders of the Lost Ark film (1981)
Rene Emile Belloq met Indiana Jones during their studies at the Sorbonne during the 1920s, while Belloq was completing his Masters in Archeology. Belloq managed to win the Archaeological Society Prize with a paper on stratigraphy.
Following completion of his Masters, Belloq began working for the Louvre. He became involved in an unsavory incident involving the acquisition of several medieval Persian artifacts from a site in Iran. The incident involved several deaths, including those of Belloq's assistants and the murder of another archeologist from the British Museum. An inquest never materialized, and no charges were brought; however Belloq was immediately fired from the Louvre, and became a mercenary, working exclusively for private collectors.
At some point he meets a Wehrmacht officer named Dietrich, who would come to hire him again years later.
In the summer of 1934, Indiana Jones embarks on an expedition to the Rub al Khali Desert in Saudi Arabia, searching for remains of an ancient nomadic culture. The project was funded by Jones's patron Marcus Brody, and was in development for a year or more. However, Rene Belloq had been conducting surveillance on Jones and his associates, and upon Jones's arrival Belloq (together with a group of mercenaries) had already conducted an extensive excavation at the dig site.
After Jones retrieves a golden idol from a ancient South American temple, Belloq and a group of natives ambush Jones outside the temple. Belloq takes the idol from him and, after Jones runs off into the jungle, Belloq gives a que to the natives to kill him. Jones narrowly escapes capture.
Belloq later reappears in Cairo, searching for the Ark of the Covenant. It is later revealed that Belloq has been working with the Nazis under Colonel Dietrich and Major Arnold Toht. Jones and Marion Ravenwood sabotage their plans to transport the Ark to Germany, and carry the Ark by freighter ship towards England. Belloq and Dietrich board a submarine to stop the ship, and take Ravenwood and the Ark to an unknown island, unaware that Jones has stowed away on board.
Belloq captures Jones and allows him to witness the opening of the Ark. After opening it, Belloq is at first delighted, but his jubilation turns to horror as the spirits released begin to invoke the wrath of God, killing the other Nazis and his assistants in gruesome fashions. Belloq's body eventually explodes.
