Mad Madam Mim

The Sword in the Stone film (1963)
novel created by
author T. H. White
(1938)

Madam Mim is the witch from King Arthur's England who moved to Duckburg.

Madam Mim or Mad Madam Mim was originally created by T. H. White for his novel The Sword in the Stone from 1938. White rewrote the story in the 1958 version The Once and Future King where Madam Mim and her Wizard's Duel with Merlin was left out, but when Disney adapted the story in 1963, Madam Mim was used in the story although in a somewhat altered form. This was the only appearance of Madam Mim in cartoons for a long time. It wasn't until the anthology House of Mouse aired in 2001 she appeared in cartoons again and so far that has only been in a few episodes.

After the movie the character was moved to modern day Duckburg where she started interacting with the other Disney characters. Mostly she was associated with the Beagle Boys and the other witches Magica de Spell and Witch Hazel, but she also had a lot of solo adventures. Unlike Magica de Spell, Madam Mim was not always a villain in the stories. From time to time she would help out instead and many of the stories were more in the vein of fun-with-magic. In US the Madam Mim was a regular in Walt Disney Comics and Beagle Boys until the series folded in the late seventies while in Europe the stories continued and new stories are still published on occasion.

Perhaps Mim's most famous escapade is when herself and Merlin the magician fight in a dual - it is described thus at Wikipedia;

"For his last lesson, Merlin transforms Wart into a bird. Merlin doesn't join him; instead, Archimedes teaches Wart the principles of flight. Wart's skill and enjoyment rapidly become apparent to Archimedes, but his daring forces him to flee from the pursuit of a hawk. During his escape, Wart is taken hostage by "The Marvelous Mad Madam Mim," a witch in competition with Merlin. She claims that her magic, which is based on selfishness and trickery, is more useful than Merlin's magic, which is "for educational purposes." Wart resists Madam Mim's attempts to seduce him away from Merlin's 'good magic' and Madam Mim decides that she will have to kill him. As Wart is still in the form of a little sparrow, Mim turns herself in to a fat pink cat and chases him around her cottage. Just as Wart is captured, Merlin arrives and challenges Madam Mim to a wizard's duel. This is where the combatants try to defeat each other with magical skill. They agree on the rules, which include 'no disappearing', 'no cheating' and 'no pink dragons and stuff', but Mim immediately breaks the rules by disappearing. Merlin and Mim take turns in transforming in to different animals and trying to get the better of each other. Mim turns herself in to a large dragon, which she justifies by saying that they didn't make a rule against purple dragons. However, Merlin transforms himself into a germ and infects her. She is defeated, bedridden and furious."
