Lt. Hiram Coffey

The Abyss film (1989)

Lt. Coffey is the SEAL team leader sent to the "Deep Core" experimental oil platform on the premise that he is on a rescue mission for the recently sunken American ballistic missile submarine. It encounted a Non-terrestrial Intelligence over the Cayman Trough, causing electrical malfunction and loss of hydraulics, making it to crash into an underwater cliff, then sink. As Soviet submarines head to the area, and with a hurricane moving in, the quickest way to mount a rescue was for a SEAL team to be inserted onto the underwater oil platform, which is near the wreck. The owner of the platform, volunteers the platform and its crew to assist in what they believe to be a rescue operation.

As it goes, Lt. Coffey, has developed High Pressure Nervous Syndrome, and is losing his ability to reason as he sinks slowly into a paranoid state.

After discovering everyone on the sub is dead Coffey and his team proceed to retrieve a warhead from the sub to destroy it and prevent weapons and code books to fall into the wrong hands - without the knowledge of the oil workers.

In the meantime bad weather on the surface has caused the towing ship to drag the oil platform to the edge of an Abyss and near drag it over when it's towing crane breaks free and falls over the edge of the canyon.

At this point, the NTIs decide to explore the rig and in doing so, contact the stranded workers, proving themselves to be an advanced alien race. They mean no harm, but the now totally paranoid Coffey does not see it this way, and prepares to send the warhead to the bottom of the trench, set on a timer to explode. Bud (the platform foreman) manages to eventually swim over to the moon pool, where he finds the warhead tied to a submersible ROV which has been programmed to go down to the bottom of the cliff to shoot video, and Coffey tampering with a chain. Bud tries to make reason with Coffey, but Coffey is driven totally mad by pressure induced paranoia and lashes out at Bud with a knife. Bud, wielding an iron pipe, hits back, but Coffey proves to be a formidable opponent in the fight, until De Vries arrives and punches him in the face. Coffey then escapes in one of the submersibles, and drives to the cliff edge to release the warhead ROV into the trench when Bud and Lindsey arrive in another submersible. They try to prevent the warhead ROV from being released but are violently hit from behind by Coffey, causing them to drop the ROV straight down the cliff wall with the warhead still attached. Lindsey manages to shove Coffey against a large boulder and over the cliff, where it implodes killing him.
