Howard Payne
Speed film (1994)
The villain Howard Payne is an insane bomber/extortionist, an explosives expert who used to be with the Atlanta, Georgia bomb squad.
His villainous exploits start when he first traps a group of office workers in a high rise building in an elevator with explosives in exchange for a payoff. But when Jack Traven and his partner Harry Temple (SWAT team explosives experts) foil his plans he escapes and in return he rigs a bomb on a public transit bus (a 1966 Santa Monica Intercity Bus Lines GM TDH-5303 New Look.) in Los Angeles. The bus must remain constantly in motion above 50 mph otherwise the bomb will explode.
Traven discovers its Payne, when he explodes another similar bus and contacts him as if with a threat.
Annie Porter a female passenger on the bus takes over the wheel when the driver is shot and aids Traven (who has jumped aboard, with a little help from his friends) in keeping the bus below 50mph. Then Traven, Porter, and Payne begin a deadly game of cat and mouse, while Traven tries to figure out where the bomb is hidden and how to disarm it.
They figure out an ingenious way to sneak the passengers off the bus without Payne knowing and prepare to take him down. Payne realizes he's been duped though and grabs Annie, pulling her onto a subway train. Jack is unrelenting in his pursuit and finds himself on top of the train with Payne's hands wrapped around his neck. It looks bleak for Jack until he sees the light at the end of the tunnel - a red signal light, that is. Jack pushes Payne's head into the light speeding toward them and with a quick snap, Payne's days of terrorizing anyone are over.
