Alex Forrest, is an editor from a publishing company, and is also an obsessively nutty fruitcake! To his misfortune, she meets Dan Gallagher, a successful, happily married New York attorney, and while his family are out of town, Dan has a brief affair with Alex. Alex however is not the fly by night type of girl, up for a quick fling, and sticks to Dan like a bad smell.
Alex Forrest's mental instability is soon displayed to Dan when she attempts suicide after Dan attempts to rid himself of her and leave their fling behind them. Alex stalks Dan and shows up at all orspicious occasions. What fuels the fire is when she tries to apologize and invites Dan to an opera of Madame Butterfly with her, but he refuses. Eventually, after ignoring another confrontation with Dan, Alex starts calling his home and does the guilt trip, by informing him that she's pregnant and wants to keep their baby, Dan is less than impressed by this new development.
The sight of Dan's family life literally makes Alex sick to her stomach. Her obsession, grows stronger as time goes on, and eventually borders on madness. She goes one step further, and while the Gallagher's are away, Alex Slaughters Dan's daughter Ellen's pet rabbit and puts it on their stove to boil - for lunch when they return!
Dan spills the beans to Beth of Alex's pregnancy, and after getting over the initial shock and anger, she forgives him. Beth warns Alex by phone, that if she persists, she will kill her. Alex retaliates by kidnapping their daughter from school. And although she takes Ellen home unharmed, Beth, is injured in a car accident, due to her panicking.
Finally, the only thing left for Alex is to eliminate her main obstacle - Dan's wife. While in the bathroom, Alex's reflection appears in the mirror in front of Beth. As she attacks Beth with a butcher knife, Dan hears the screaming and runs to help. He wrestles Alex into the bathtub and presumes he has drowned her. Alex however has fooled him, emerges from the water swinging her knife at him. Beth, who had left the room, appears in the doorway and shoots her dead with a gun Dan has previously bought.
